Website Visitors

Browser Extension — Jenni Web Importer

The Jenni Web Importer browser extension allows you to save references and PDFs to your Jenni library directly from web pages. This section describes the data practices specific to the extension.

Data Collection

When you use the extension to import a reference, the extension collects the following data:

  • Page URLs: The URL of the page you are actively importing, used to detect and extract bibliographic metadata such as titles, authors, and DOIs.

  • Page content: The text and HTML of the page you are importing, used to identify reference metadata. Full page HTML may be sent to Jenni's servers when simpler extraction methods are insufficient.

  • PDF files: PDF documents are downloaded from the page you are importing and uploaded to your Jenni library.

  • Account information: Your Jenni account email address, display name, and authentication tokens (via Firebase) are used to authenticate your requests.

  • Page snapshots: When you use the snapshot feature, a local copy of the visible page is captured and converted to PDF entirely within your browser before upload.

  • Google Docs content: When you explicitly choose to import a Google Document, the extension fetches the document content using your existing Google session.

The extension does not track your browsing history. No data is collected or transmitted unless you actively initiate an import or interact with the extension.

Data Handling

  • Page content is processed to extract bibliographic metadata (title, authors, DOIs, publication date) and is sent to Jenni's servers only when you initiate an import.

  • PDFs are uploaded, parsed, and indexed on Jenni's servers to populate your library.

  • Page snapshots are generated locally in your browser and only uploaded when you confirm the import.

  • Google Docs content is fetched directly from Google using your existing authenticated session and is not stored by the extension beyond the active import session.

Data Storage

  • Local storage (chrome.storage): The extension stores your authentication state, a limited import history (capped at 50 URLs and automatically cleared after 7 days), and your extension settings (such as theme preference and disabled sites) locally on your device.

  • Local cache (IndexedDB): PDF metadata is cached locally to avoid redundant downloads.

  • Jenni servers: Imported references, PDFs, and associated metadata are stored in your Jenni library via Firebase Firestore and Google Cloud Storage as part of your Jenni account.

The extension does not maintain a browsing history database or any persistent record of pages you visit but do not import.

Data Sharing

The extension shares data with the following services only as described:

  • Jenni AI servers: Bibliographic metadata, PDFs, and page content are sent to Jenni's servers when you initiate an import.

  • Firebase (Google): Used for user authentication and library data storage (Firestore and Cloud Storage).

  • PostHog: Used for product analytics. Autocapture and session recording are disabled. Only explicit analytics events are sent, such as import actions, extension version, and action type. No page content or browsing activity is included in analytics events.

  • Slack: Only if you manually choose to report an issue. The report includes your email address, the page URL, and diagnostic information to help us resolve the issue.

  • NIH PMC API: When importing from PubMed Central pages, the extension may query the NIH identifier conversion API to retrieve article metadata.

Your data is never sold to or shared with advertisers or other third parties for marketing purposes. No browsing activity is tracked or transmitted unless you actively use the import feature.

Extension Permissions

The extension requests the following browser permissions:

  • Scripting: To extract page content and metadata when you initiate an import.

  • Storage: To save your authentication state, settings, and import cache locally.

  • Active Tab and Tabs: To access the URL and content of the tab you are actively importing from.

  • Host permissions (all URLs): Required to fetch pages and PDF files from any website you choose to import from.

  • Side Panel: To display the Jenni interface in the browser side panel.

  • Context Menus: To provide a right-click menu option for quick access.

  • Notifications: To display one-time setup notifications.

Security

The security of your Personal Information is important to us, but remember that no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your Personal Information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Advertisements

Ads appearing on our website may be delivered to users by advertising partners, who may set cookies. These cookies allow the ad server to recognize your computer each time they send you an online advertisement to compile information about you or others who use your computer. This information allows ad networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you. This Privacy Policy covers the use of cookies by Jenni AI, Inc and does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers.
