Is research the same as a thesis in academia?

Research and a thesis are closely related in academia, but they are not the same thing. Research is the overall process of asking a question, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions, while a thesis is the written document that reports and defends the results of a major research project.

In other words, you do research, then you turn that research into a thesis. The research can involve reading existing literature, designing a study, collecting data, analyzing results, and interpreting what they mean. Research itself can appear in many formats. It might be written up as a journal article, a conference paper, a poster, or a capstone project. It often includes chapters such as introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion.

Even if the underlying research is strong, a thesis can be marked down if it does not follow the required style guide.

So, research and a thesis are connected but not interchangeable. Research is the intellectual work you carry out, and the thesis is the formal written report that presents that work in a way your institution can evaluate and archive.
